The court did accommodate proper breaks and ensured clear explanations as to the charges faced. Learning points: The role of an intermediary is to help with communication. An expert who considers that a defendant might need an intermediary should advise the instruction of an intermediary with a view to identifying any communication difficulties with which they might assist and give their reasons. Clear explanations as to the charges faced by a defendant are in the first instance a matter for the defendant’s lawyers and not for an intermediary.
