Retiring from your role as an expert witness is a significant decision that requires careful consideration and planning. There are important steps and factors to consider as you prepare for retirement. The EWI has just published new Guidance on Approaching Retirement to enusre that you avoid the pitfalls and take the stress out of retiring from Expert Witness work. 

Your Duty to the Court

Your duty to the court means that even if you have retired from working as an Expert Witness, you may still be required to act as an Expert Witness in any case where you accepted the instruction and wrote a report.

You will also need to consider:

  • Planning in advance for your retirement

  • What to do if you need to retire due to ill health

  • What to do if you still have active cases awaiting resolution

  • Professional Indemnity Insurance

  • Giving up registration with a Regulatory body or any Professional Memberships

  • Documentation and records

  • Winding up your business
