He had pleaded guilty to a number of offences: arson, assault causing harm, theft, assault, using or engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour and being intoxicated in a public place. The Director of Public Prosecutions sought a review of the sentences on the grounds that some of these were unduly lenient.
